Google has launched new AI-powered scam detection features for Android devices. These tools aim to identify and warn users about scam messages and calls in real-time. The features work by recognizing suspicious patterns in conversations while ensuring user privacy.

How Scam Detection in Google Messages Works
The company has introduced Scam Detection for Google Messages to help users identify potential scams. This tool scans messages in real-time, even after the first message has been received.
If an SMS, MMS, or RCS message from a non-contact appears suspicious, Google alerts the user with a warning. The user can then choose to block, dismiss, or report the sender.
This feature is enabled by default, ensuring protection without requiring manual activation. All message processing happens on the device itself, safeguarding user privacy. If a user reports a scam message, only sender details and recent messages are shared with Google and network providers to improve spam detection.
Currently, this feature is available in English for users in the US, UK, and Canada. Google plans to roll it out in more regions soon.
Scam Detection for Calls: Real-Time Protection Against Fraud
Alongside message protection, the company has also introduced Scam Detection for calls. This feature scans call audio in real-time to detect potential scams.
Unlike traditional call screening, this tool does not record or store conversations. It also does not transcribe calls, ensuring complete privacy. When enabled, Scam Detection alerts users with a beep sound during the call if it detects suspicious activity.
By default, this feature is turned off, and it only works for calls from unknown numbers. According to Google, early testing has shown that scam alerts help users stay cautious and avoid falling for fraudulent schemes.
This feature was initially launched on Pixel devices in late 2024.
