Microsoft Readies Windows 11 26H1

Microsoft is reportedly preparing Windows 11 26H1, a next-generation operating system update built exclusively for new Arm-based PCs. The version is based on the Bromine platform and will roll out in the first half of 2026, aligning with upcoming devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 and NVIDIA N1X chips.

A New OS Platform Beyond Germanium

While Windows 11 25H2 continues on the Germanium platform, Microsoft’s 26H1 release represents a major shift. This version is a complete OS upgrade rather than a simple feature update. Reports suggest that the final RTM build, likely in the 28000 series, will be completed by November 2025.

Once finalized, OEMs will begin optimizing firmware and drivers for devices running Snapdragon X2 and NVIDIA’s Arm-based chips. This move signals Microsoft’s intent to create a more unified and optimized experience for next-gen “AI PCs.”

Snapdragon X2 Leads the Way for 2026 Arm Laptops

Qualcomm officially announced the Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme chips on September 25, 2025. These processors promise higher efficiency, improved NPU performance, and faster AI capabilities. Devices powered by X2 are expected to launch in early 2026, making the 26H1 release a perfect fit for them.

With this update, Windows 11 aims to take better advantage of Arm architecture, especially in AI acceleration and battery optimization — key areas for future laptops.

NVIDIA N1X Expected to Join the Ecosystem

On the NVIDIA side, things are still under wraps. The company hasn’t officially revealed the N1 series for consumer PCs. However, CEO Jensen Huang recently mentioned that the N1 architecture already powers the DGX Spark system.

While DGX Spark runs on DGX OS, leaks suggest that a desktop-oriented N1X version may arrive soon, possibly sharing similar cores with Blackwell-based GPUs. If accurate, these chips could form the base of NVIDIA’s first Windows-compatible Arm systems.

Exclusive to New Devices — For Now

For now, Windows 11 26H1 won’t appear in Windows Update for existing PCs. It is designed specifically for new Arm hardware and will debut alongside Snapdragon X2 and NVIDIA N1X systems.

Microsoft is expected to integrate 26H1 features into a broader release, Windows 11 26H2, in the second half of 2026. Until then, 26H1 will serve as the foundation for the next generation of AI-powered Arm PCs.
