A familiar feature returns with a modern twist
WhatsApp is bringing back its old About feature, and it now looks a lot like Instagram Notes. The platform says About was actually its first feature. Before WhatsApp pushed private and secure messaging, it helped people share quick updates about their day. Now, the company wants users to use it again, but in a more visible and useful way.
The new About sits at the top of chats
You will now see About at the top of 1-1 chats and on profiles. The placement makes it easier to notice short status-style updates. Users can share what they are doing, why they can’t talk, or even what they want to talk about. They only need a short phrase and an emoji.
Timed updates add more flexibility
The new About disappears after one day. However, users can change this timer. They can make it vanish sooner or keep it longer. WhatsApp has placed these options inside Settings under Set About, keeping the controls simple for everyone.
Replying to About makes chats faster
WhatsApp now lets people reply directly to someone’s About. They only need to tap the update inside a chat. This creates a quick way to start conversations based on someone’s mood or schedule.
Privacy settings remain central
Users can choose who sees their About. They can limit it to contacts or make it visible to more people. WhatsApp says this control helps people feel safe while sharing short updates.
Rolling out on mobile this week
WhatsApp has already started rolling out About for mobile users. The update brings a familiar feature back to life while offering a lighter, more spontaneous way to communicate.
