Spotify Now Lets You Share Real-Time Listening Updates on Messages

Spotify Makes Music Sharing More Social

Spotify is pushing music sharing to the next level. The company has introduced two new features inside Messages — Listening Activity and Request to Jam. Together, they turn private chats into live music spaces.

Spotify says users already share music heavily inside the app. Nearly 40 million people have sent hundreds of millions of messages so far. The new update builds on that behavior and makes listening more interactive.

What Is Listening Activity on Spotify

Listening Activity lets users show what they are currently streaming in real time. If no music is playing, Spotify displays the most recently played track instead.

The feature is optional and privacy-focused. Users can choose whether to turn it on and who can see it. Only people already connected through Messages can view listening activity.

Once enabled, activity appears at the top of chats and in the Messages side drawer. Tapping on a friend’s activity allows users to play the track, save it, open options, or react using emojis.

Request to Jam Makes Group Listening Instant

Spotify is also introducing Request to Jam to turn solo listening into shared moments. The feature allows users to invite friends into a live Jam session directly from Messages.

Premium users can send Jam requests from chat. The recipient can accept or decline. Once accepted, the session starts instantly, even if users are in different locations.

Both listeners can add songs to a shared queue. Spotify also suggests tracks based on combined listening habits. Users can leave at any time, and unanswered invites expire automatically.

Who Can Use These Features

Listening Activity is available to all users who have access to Messages. Request to Jam works best with Premium users, but Free users can still join when invited.

Spotify confirms both features are available only to users aged 16 and above. The rollout has started on Android and iOS and will expand fully by early February.

Why This Update Matters

Spotify is turning passive sharing into real-time interaction. Messages is no longer just about links. It is becoming a space where listening, discovery, and conversation happen together.
