MediaTek Kompanio 540 Brings Smarter Performance to Chromebooks
MediaTek has introduced the new Kompanio 540, a next-generation processor designed for affordable and efficient student Chromebooks. The chip promises superior power efficiency, enabling longer battery life and a fanless design for quieter, cooler, and lighter laptops.
Starting January 2026, Chromebooks powered by MediaTek Kompanio 540 will reach classrooms and homes, aiming to redefine how students learn and create in a digital-first world.
Octa-core power meets classroom performance
At its core, the MediaTek Kompanio 540 runs on an octa-core processor featuring two high-performance Arm Cortex-A78 CPUs. It’s paired with a dual-core graphics engine, LPDDR5 memory, and UFS 3.1 storage support for fast and responsive performance.
These specs translate to smoother multitasking, whether students are switching between tabs, editing projects, or exploring STEM-based applications like Tinkercad and Minecraft Education Edition. The focus is on giving users reliable speed without compromising portability or battery life.
Energy-efficient and fanless by design
A major highlight of the Kompanio 540 is its 35% longer battery life compared to rival chips. This allows Chromebooks to deliver all-day productivity on a single charge.
Thanks to MediaTek’s power-efficient design, these laptops can run without fans, ensuring silent operation—ideal for classrooms, libraries, and shared learning spaces. Moreover, the chip enables devices to stay cool and lightweight, enhancing portability for students on the move.
Smooth streaming and media performance
Beyond productivity, the Kompanio 540 includes a powerful video decoding engine optimized for streaming and media playback. Users can expect smooth, high-resolution video even on external displays, all while conserving battery power.
This makes it suitable for hybrid learning, where video calls, tutorials, and multimedia sessions are part of daily routines.
Available in early 2026
MediaTek confirmed that Chromebooks powered by the Kompanio 540 will debut in January 2026. With education technology evolving rapidly, the company aims to make digital learning more efficient and accessible through smarter, cooler, and longer-lasting devices.
The Kompanio series continues to play a crucial role in bringing AI-driven efficiency and power optimization to student laptops worldwide.
