Instagram Adds Reposts, Map, and Friends’ Reels Tab to Keep You Hooked

Here’s Everything You Need to Know About These Features

Instagram just dropped a bunch of new features, and while they’re meant to “help you connect,” the question is — connect more, or scroll more? Let’s unpack what’s new and whether these updates are worth your time… or just Meta’s.

Reposts Are Now Official (And They’re Everywhere)

Remember when people used third-party apps to repost on Instagram? That’s history now.

Instagram has launched native reposting for Reels and posts, letting users reshare public content directly. These reposts will show up on your friends’ feeds and on a separate tab in your profile. You can even add a short note when you repost — because what’s a share without a hot take?

For creators, this might be a win. If someone reposts your Reel, it could now show up to a completely new audience. Think of it as free reach, but without guarantees.

Still, it’s hard not to wonder — is this genuine sharing or just another way to flood feeds?

The Instagram Map Wants to Be Your Social GPS

With the new Instagram Map, the app is suddenly feeling a lot like Snap Maps… but with more filters.

You can now share your last active location with selected friends. If you’ve opted in, your location updates every time you open the app. Want to keep it private? You can choose who sees what — and even exclude places or specific people.

Parents with supervised teen accounts get notified if location sharing begins. Instagram says it’s all about safety and social discovery, but here’s a thought — is broadcasting your hangout spot really necessary?

Even if you’re not sharing your location, you can still explore Reels, posts, stories, and notes from places tagged by your friends and creators. It’s like Google Maps meets influencer culture.

The Friends Tab in Reels Is Like a Social Cheat Sheet

Instagram’s new Friends tab in Reels is your window into what your mutuals are liking, commenting on, or sharing. If you’ve started a Blend with someone, recommendations from that also show up here.

This tab turns Reels from passive scrolling to… well, more socially-approved scrolling. Controls are also being added to let you hide your likes and mute specific friends if the feed gets too noisy.

But one has to ask — do we really need another place to see what everyone else thinks is cool?

So, Are These Features Worth It?

Instagram says it’s all about making connection easier. But let’s be honest — these are subtle nudges to spend more time on the app. Whether that’s a value-add or just another time sink depends on how you use it.

These features are rolling out now, with the map launching first in the US. Others like the Friends tab and reposting are being launched globally.

Stay connected, or stay distracted. Your choice.
