Nokia Extends Licensing Deal With HMD Global
Nokia has extended its licensing agreement with HMD Global for another two to three years beyond its original 2026 expiry, according to people aware of the development. This ensures that the Nokia brand will remain active in the feature phone market for the foreseeable future.
HMD Global to Continue Producing Feature Phones
HMD Global, the custodian of the Nokia brand since 2016, manufactures Nokia feature phones in India and China. India remains the largest market for these devices, while exports from India support Nokia’s global footprint. Another source confirmed that business units in China also received information regarding the extension.
India at the Heart of Nokia’s Feature Phone Market
India continues to be the single-largest market for feature phones. According to IDC data, shipments reached nearly 54 million units in 2024. For many consumers, feature phones remain a reliable and affordable choice, especially in rural and semi-urban regions where smartphone penetration is lower.
Brand Maintains Strong Presence Through HMD
Market research shows that HMD dominates India’s feature phone segment. In 2024, it held 22.4 percent market share by volume and 30.7 percent in value terms, according to IDC. The extension of the licensing deal ensures that Nokia retains its presence in a market it once defined globally.
Why the Extension Matters
The renewed deal provides stability for both companies. For Nokia, it safeguards its brand in a category that still carries significant demand. For HMD, it ensures continued access to a legacy name that holds strong recognition in both urban and rural India. The extension also highlights the sustained role of feature phones in India’s mobile landscape, despite the rising popularity of smartphones.
