Meta Rewrites Its AR Timeline

Meta is delaying its Phoenix mixed-reality glasses to 2027. The company planned an initial release in late 2026. However, an internal memo reported by Business Insider shows Meta wants more time to refine the device. Moreover, executives Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns said the extended window gives the teams “more breathing room to get the details right.”

Why Meta Wants Another Year

The Phoenix glasses, known earlier as Puffin, aim to blend digital elements with the real world. They reportedly weigh around 100 grams. Furthermore, early reports suggest the displays and performance sit below premium headsets such as Apple’s Vision Pro. Therefore, Meta seems determined to avoid an unfinished or underwhelming product launch.

Mixed Reality Is Getting Crowded

Mixed reality continues to evolve rapidly. It merges virtual and augmented layers. As a result, hardware makers race to balance weight, power and immersion. The delay also comes as Meta reportedly plans up to 30% budget cuts for its metaverse division. Bloomberg said Reality Labs will face tighter spending. This unit builds everything from Quest headsets to Ray-Ban smart glasses. Therefore, the Phoenix timeline shift could help Meta align its hardware roadmap with revised budgets.
