Google Expands Quick Share AirDrop Support to Pixel 9 Series

Key Highlights:

  • Pixel 9a is excluded, while Pixel 9 Pro Fold is included.
  • Google expands Quick Share’s AirDrop support to Pixel 9 lineup, enabling direct file sharing with Apple devices.
  • Feature allows peer-to-peer transfers between Android and iPhone, iPad, and macOS.
  • Rollout is phased and requires a Quick Share Extension update.

Google has expanded Quick Share’s AirDrop support to the Pixel 9 series, allowing Android users to send files directly to Apple devices. The update matters because it removes long-standing friction between Android and iOS users by enabling fast, secure, peer-to-peer sharing without third-party apps or cloud routing.

After debuting on the Pixel 10 last year, the feature is now rolling out to the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Google confirmed that the rollout is happening in phases and will reach all eligible devices over the coming weeks.

What Is Changing With Quick Share on Pixel 9?

Quick Share now supports direct file transfers with AirDrop on Apple devices. This means Pixel users can send photos, videos, and documents straight to iPhones, iPads, and Macs without cables, servers, or sign-ins.

To receive files, the Apple user must open AirDrop settings and switch visibility to “Everyone for 10 minutes.” On the Pixel device, users can share content as usual via Quick Share and select the nearby Apple device. The transfer completes once the recipient accepts.

How to Enable Quick Share AirDrop Support

Pixel 9 users must install the Quick Share Extension manually:

  • Open Settings
  • Search for System services
  • Scroll to Available Updates
  • Tap Quick Share Extension and update

Once installed, the feature works automatically when compatible Apple devices are nearby.

Why Google Says Security Comes First

Google implemented this cross-platform sharing without relying on workarounds. The connection is direct and peer-to-peer. Data never passes through a server, shared files are not logged, and no extra device information is exchanged.

Google also said it is open to collaborating with Apple in the future to enable “Contacts Only” AirDrop support, which would reduce the need for temporary public visibility.

Which Pixel Devices Are Excluded?

The rollout currently excludes the Pixel 9a. Google has clarified that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is included after updating its original announcement.

What This Means Going Forward

With this update, Google is taking a clear step toward reducing ecosystem lock-in. Quick Share with AirDrop support makes Android–Apple sharing faster, simpler, and more private. As the rollout completes, Pixel 9 users gain one of the most practical cross-platform features yet — without compromising security.
