Qualcomm has launched the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipsets at its Snapdragon for India event in New Delhi. The new processors target mid-range and affordable Android phones and bring features that were previously limited to premium smartphones.
The company says upcoming phones from brands like Oppo, Redmi, Realme, and Honor will use the new Snapdragon platforms. While Qualcomm has not confirmed launch timelines yet, the announcement signals a major shift in how budget smartphones will handle gaming, AI photography, and connectivity in 2026.
Why Is Qualcomm Focusing on Affordable AI Phones?
The biggest takeaway from Qualcomm’s latest launch is not just raw performance. It is the attempt to bring flagship-like experiences to cheaper smartphones.
Until recently, features like AI night photography, high frame rate gaming, and 144Hz displays mostly appeared in expensive devices. Now, Qualcomm is pushing those technologies into mainstream Android phones.
That matters because India remains one of the world’s largest budget and mid-range smartphone markets. Most users upgrade in the Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 30,000 range. As a result, chipmakers are racing to improve experiences without dramatically increasing costs.

What Makes the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 Different?
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is the more powerful of the two new chipsets. Qualcomm claims it offers 20 percent faster app launches and 18 percent less screen stutter compared to the previous generation.
The processor uses an octa-core Kryo CPU setup with four performance cores clocked at up to 2.6GHz and four efficiency cores running at up to 2.0GHz. It also supports up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.
However, gaming appears to be one of Qualcomm’s biggest priorities here.
The chipset includes Snapdragon Game Super Resolution, Adaptive Performance Engine 3.0, and Qualcomm Frames Per Second 3.0. These technologies are designed to stabilize frame rates and improve power efficiency during long gaming sessions.
Interestingly, Qualcomm is also bringing support for FHD+ displays with refresh rates up to 144Hz. That could lead to smoother scrolling and more responsive gameplay on upcoming mid-range phones.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 Also Pushes AI Camera Features
Camera upgrades are another major focus.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 supports camera sensors up to 200 megapixels and enables 4K HDR video recording at 30fps. Qualcomm has also added AI-powered Night Vision technology to improve low-light photography.
This reflects a wider trend in the smartphone market. Companies are increasingly relying on AI imaging instead of only bigger sensors to improve photos. As a result, affordable phones are now expected to deliver sharper night shots and better video stabilization.

What Does Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 Bring to Budget Phones?
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 focuses more aggressively on entry-level and affordable smartphones. Still, Qualcomm says the improvements are substantial.
According to the company, the chipset delivers 43 percent faster app launches and 25 percent less screen stutter than its predecessor.
It also uses a 4nm architecture and features two performance cores clocked at up to 2.4GHz alongside six efficiency cores running at up to 2.0GHz.
The GPU upgrade is particularly notable. Qualcomm claims up to 77 percent better graphics performance compared to the previous generation.
That is important because budget smartphones often struggle with gaming consistency and UI smoothness after extended usage. Qualcomm appears to be addressing those pain points directly.
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 also supports gameplay up to 90fps, which is a first for the Snapdragon 4-series lineup.
Why These New Snapdragon Chips Matter for Buyers
For consumers, the launch is less about benchmark numbers and more about everyday usability.
Users upgrading from older Android phones could see smoother multitasking, faster app loading, improved gaming stability, and better camera processing. Features once reserved for premium devices are gradually becoming standard expectations in lower price segments.
At the same time, competition between MediaTek and Qualcomm is intensifying in India. MediaTek has aggressively expanded its Dimensity lineup across affordable smartphones. Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon launch clearly aims to strengthen its position in that market.
The real test, however, will depend on pricing and optimization from smartphone brands.
If companies like Redmi, Oppo, and Realme manage to pair these new Snapdragon chips with aggressive pricing, the mid-range smartphone segment could become even more competitive in the coming months.
