The government of Meghalaya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Starlink India to expand satellite internet access across remote and difficult terrain. The initiative aims to reduce connectivity gaps and strengthen digital services across the state.
The Meghalaya government said the partnership will support education, healthcare, governance, and economic participation in regions where fiber and mobile networks remain limited.
Why Did Meghalaya Sign an MoU With Starlink?
The agreement focuses on addressing long-standing connectivity challenges across mountainous and hard-to-reach parts of the state. According to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, connecting remote schools, health centers, and communities remains a priority despite infrastructure improvements over the past eight years.
He said:
“Glad to witness the MoU Signing between Government of Meghalaya and Starlink India. Over the past 8 years, we have strengthened infrastructure, embraced technology, and improved governance, reducing processes that once took 30 days to just 3 days. Yet, connecting our remotest schools, health centres, and communities remains a challenge.”
Satellite-based connectivity offers a practical solution where laying fiber cables or building towers is difficult. As a result, the partnership signals a shift toward space-based infrastructure for last-mile access.
