  • India remains Truecaller’s largest market as scam calls continue to surge.

Truecaller has introduced a new family protection feature that allows a trusted contact to monitor and even disconnect scam calls on behalf of family members. The update aims to help protect vulnerable users from rising phone fraud.

The caller identity platform said the feature is rolling out globally, including India, after early testing in several countries showed promising results.

The new capability allows one person in a family group to receive alerts about potential fraud calls and remotely end them if necessary.

What is the new Truecaller family protection feature?

The new feature lets a tech-savvy user become the admin of a small family or friends group inside the Truecaller app.

The admin can create a group with up to five members. Once members join, the admin begins receiving alerts when the system flags a potentially fraudulent call to any member.

If the admin believes the call may lead to a scam, they can remotely disconnect it. This provides a quick intervention, especially when elderly or less tech-savvy users receive suspicious calls.

Truecaller said the feature is free and does not require a paid subscription.

However, the remote call disconnection feature currently works only on Android devices. Users on iOS can still receive fraud alerts but cannot yet have calls ended remotely.

How Truecaller helps families stop scam calls

Phone scams often rely on urgency and confusion. Victims may not realize the risk until the call ends. Truecaller’s new system introduces a second layer of awareness.

When the system flags a suspected fraud call, the admin receives a notification in real time. They can then review the alert and intervene immediately.

This approach shifts fraud protection from an individual responsibility to a shared one. For example, a younger family member could monitor alerts for elderly parents who may not recognize scam tactics.

The admin can also take preventive actions beyond call monitoring. They can block specific phone numbers or international calling codes and share that blocklist across the group.

As a result, suspicious numbers can be stopped before reaching other family members.

Additional monitoring features for Android users

On Android devices, the feature includes several additional capabilities designed for safety monitoring. Members can grant the admin permission to view certain phone activity signals. These include whether the user is walking or driving, the device battery level, and the phone’s sound settings.

For example, the admin can see whether a phone is on silent mode before attempting to call a family member. Truecaller said this information helps avoid distractions while someone is driving or moving. The company also positioned this as a useful way for families to check in on elderly members.

However, Truecaller emphasized that the admin cannot view sensitive information. Admins cannot access a member’s non-spam call history or SMS messages.

Why Truecaller is expanding protection against fraud calls

Phone fraud continues to grow worldwide, and India remains one of the most affected markets. Truecaller said it detected more than 7.7 billion fraud calls globally last year.

Many scams rely on impersonation tactics. For example, criminals may pretend to be bank officials, telecom operators, or law enforcement officers.

One common tactic in India is the so-called “digital arrest” scam. In these cases, attackers claim to be police officers and pressure victims to transfer money or share personal information.

Truecaller believes family-based monitoring could reduce the success rate of such scams. Kunal Dua, Chief Product Officer at Truecaller, said fraud affects nearly everyone in some way.

“I think, unfortunately, all of us know somebody or another in our families or friends who have been impacted by fraud,” Dua said.

He described the feature as a shift in how Truecaller approaches fraud prevention.

Could AI become the next layer of scam protection?

Truecaller is also exploring ways to use AI to strengthen its fraud protection tools.

The company previously launched an AI voicemail feature in India. The tool answers calls when users are unavailable and generates a transcript summary. Now the company is considering similar AI capabilities for family protection.

Future versions may automatically analyze calls and alert the admin about the type of fraud being attempted. Another possibility is AI-driven call screening. In that system, the app could automatically disconnect calls when it detects scam-related phrases.

For instance, phrases linked to common fraud attempts such as “digital arrest” could trigger automatic call blocking. Such features could significantly reduce the time scammers have to manipulate victims.

Truecaller faces new competition and regulatory challenges

While Truecaller continues expanding its features, the company is facing growing competition and regulatory pressure.

In India, telecom authorities are rolling out the Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) system. CNAP shows the caller’s name as registered with the telecom operator.

The system could reduce reliance on third-party caller ID apps. However, Truecaller believes CNAP alone cannot fully address spam calls. During an earnings call, CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala said CNAP and Truecaller can operate together.

He argued that the company’s community reporting system offers deeper context and spam detection. At the same time, Truecaller’s financial performance has recently come under pressure.

The company’s stock has dropped more than 80 percent over the past year. Its operating profitability also declined sharply in the latest earnings report.

Still, the company continues investing in new safety features.

Why this Truecaller update matters

The new family protection feature shows how Truecaller is evolving beyond caller identification. The platform is now focusing more on real-time fraud prevention and shared protection within families.

As scam calls grow more sophisticated, tools that allow trusted contacts to intervene quickly may become an important defense.

For millions of users dealing with daily spam and fraud attempts, the latest Truecaller update introduces a new approach: stopping scams before the conversation even finishes.
