Samsung Launches Eco-Friendly 13-Inch Color E-Paper to Replace Printed Signage

Key Highlights

  • Samsung launches a 13-inch color e-paper display made with phytoplankton-derived bio-resin, a global first.
  • The display consumes zero power for static images, cutting energy use sharply.
  • Built for businesses, it replaces printed signage with ultra-slim, cable-free digital displays.
  • Content can be managed locally or remotely via Samsung E-Paper App and Samsung VXT.

Samsung Electronics has launched a 13-inch color e-paper display that uses bio-resin derived from phytoplankton, marking a world-first in commercial display technology. Announced in Korea on January 28, 2026, the new display matters because it blends ultra-low power performance with material innovation, offering businesses a cleaner alternative to printed signage.

What makes Samsung’s new color e-paper different?

Unlike conventional digital signage, Samsung’s 13-inch Color E-Paper uses advanced digital ink technology. As a result, it shows paper-like visuals while consuming almost no energy. Static images stay on screen at zero watts, which significantly lowers daily power use. When updates happen, energy consumption remains far below that of LCD or LED signage.

The display measures close to A4 paper size and delivers a 1,600 × 1,200 resolution in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Therefore, it fits naturally in places where printed signs still dominate, such as shelves, counters, doors, and tabletops.

How does phytoplankton bio-resin change display sustainability?

This launch puts Samsung at the center of material innovation. The housing uses bio-resin derived from phytoplankton, verified by UL. In total, the casing contains 45% recycled plastic and 10% bio-based resin. According to Samsung, this approach can reduce carbon emissions during manufacturing by over 40% compared to petroleum-based plastics.

Moreover, sustainability goes beyond the device. The packaging, including cushioning and accessory boxes, is made entirely from paper, reducing plastic waste across the supply chain.

Why is this e-paper practical for businesses?

The 13-inch color e-paper includes a built-in rechargeable battery and USB Type-C charging. Since it does not need permanent power cables, installation stays simple. The display is just 17.9mm thick and weighs 0.9kg with the battery, making it easy to move as campaigns change.

For content control, Samsung offers two tools. The Samsung E-Paper App lets staff update displays directly from Android or iOS devices. Meanwhile, Samsung VXT allows remote monitoring, content deployment, and preview checks, helping teams manage displays at scale.

What comes next for Samsung Color E-Paper?

Alongside this launch, Samsung will showcase a new 20-inch color e-paper model at ISE 2026 in Barcelona. This expansion builds on its existing 32-inch model and reflects Samsung’s push to replace paper signage across industries. As Samsung continues to hold over 36% of the global digital signage market, the move signals where low-power displays are headed next.
