Apple Upgrades AirTag with Wider Range, Louder Sound, and Airline-Friendly Tracking

Key Highlights:

  • New AirTag offers up to 50 percent longer Precision Finding range.
  • Louder speaker makes it easier to locate items indoors.
  • Now works with Apple Watch for on-wrist tracking.
  • Supports airline-backed Share Item Location feature.

Apple has unveiled a new AirTag with longer range, louder alerts, and deeper integration with the Find My network. The update matters because it makes lost items easier to recover, even across airports and crowded spaces. The accessory keeps its price while gaining features once limited to iPhones.

The new AirTag builds on what made the original popular: simple tracking for everyday objects. But this time, Apple pushes findability further.

What’s new in the AirTag update?

The new AirTag runs on Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. The same chip powers the iPhone 17 lineup and newer Apple Watches. Precision Finding now works from up to 50 percent farther away. Users get clearer haptic, visual, and audio guidance.

For the first time, Apple Watch users can track an AirTag directly from the wrist. Owners of Apple Watch Series 9 and later, or Watch Ultra 2 and later, can use Precision Finding without pulling out a phone. This turns the watch into a real-world compass for lost items.

The Bluetooth range also expands. That helps users locate items across larger rooms, parking areas, or transit zones.

Why does a louder AirTag matter?

The internal redesign makes the new AirTag 50 percent louder. The sound now carries up to twice the distance of the previous model. This helps in real homes and real chaos. Think sofa cushions, backpacks, or cluttered desks.

The louder chime pairs with improved Precision Finding. Together, they reduce the time between “lost” and “found.”

How does airline sharing change recovery?

The new AirTag integrates with Share Item Location. This iOS feature lets users temporarily share an item’s live location with trusted third parties, including airlines.

Apple has partnered with more than 50 airlines. When luggage goes missing, users can send a secure link to the airline’s support team. According to SITA, this system cuts baggage delays by 26 percent and reduces unrecoverable luggage by 90 percent.

Access stays limited. Only authorized staff can view the location. The link expires after seven days or ends when the item is recovered.

Is AirTag still private and secure?

Yes. The new AirTag keeps Apple’s privacy-first design. It stores no location history. All Find My communication uses end-to-end encryption. Only the owner can see the data. Apple cannot identify who helped locate an item.

It also includes protections against unwanted tracking. These include cross-platform alerts and rotating Bluetooth identifiers.

The new AirTag keeps the same design and price. It works with all existing accessories. In short, AirTag becomes louder, smarter, and more travel-ready, without changing how people already use it.
