Disney bets big on AI creativity
The Disney and OpenAI partnership marks one of the boldest moves yet between entertainment and generative AI. Disney signed a three-year licensing deal that allows Sora to create short AI videos featuring more than 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars. The videos will follow user prompts and turn fan imagination into fast social-ready clips.
Sora gets access to iconic character worlds
Under the deal, Sora can use costumes, props, vehicles and environments from Disney’s biggest franchises. However, it cannot use actor likenesses or voices. The companies say the collaboration will help fans engage with characters like Mickey Mouse, Simba, Ariel, Baymax, Groot, Iron Man, Yoda and more in new creative ways.
Moreover, ChatGPT Images will convert simple text prompts into full images using the same licensed library.
Disney+ to offer curated AI-generated video experiences
Disney and OpenAI will also build new AI-powered experiences for Disney+ subscribers. Fans will be able to watch curated selections of Sora-generated content on the platform. Both companies promise age-appropriate controls, strong safety guardrails and strict rights protection.
A major investment deepens the relationship
Disney will invest $1 billion in OpenAI as part of the agreement. It will also receive warrants to buy more equity. Additionally, Disney will adopt OpenAI’s APIs across its internal tools, product workflows and employee use cases.
A shared commitment to responsible AI
Both companies stress that the partnership centres on responsible AI development. They pledge to prevent harmful content, protect creator rights and establish systems that respect voice and likeness boundaries.
Fan-generated videos arrive in 2026
Sora and ChatGPT Images will start generating fan-inspired video creations in early 2026. The companies call this a new era of interactive storytelling powered by AI, where fans shape the stories they love in personal ways.
