ChatGPT Group Chats Are Live For All Users Globally

A New Social Push Begins

ChatGPT is no longer just a one-on-one assistant. OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT group chats globally, opening the feature to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users. The move arrives after a short pilot in Japan and New Zealand.

ChatGPT Becomes a Shared Workspace

The new feature lets people collaborate in a single conversation with ChatGPT. Now, users can plan trips, co-write documents, compare ideas, or settle debates together. Moreover, ChatGPT steps in only when tagged, keeping the flow natural and quiet when needed.

Up to 20 People Can Join

Each group chat supports up to 20 participants. Everyone needs to accept an invite and create a short profile. Yet personal settings and memory stay private. Additionally, adding new people creates a fresh conversation, ensuring earlier chats remain untouched.

Easy Controls and Smarter Presence

Users can start a group by tapping the people icon and adding contacts or sharing a link. ChatGPT can react with emojis and even reference profile photos. Transitioning from a chatbot to a social layer, OpenAI says this is just the start.

A Bigger Vision for Collaboration

OpenAI hints at a future where ChatGPT plays a more active role in real-time group discussions. The feature also follows the recent launch of GPT-5.1 and the social video app Sora, showing OpenAI’s push toward more interactive experiences.
