Snapchat Brings Topic Chats For a New Wave of Community Conversations

Snapchat Pushes Into Community Conversations

Snapchat is stepping beyond private chats and moving into bigger public spaces. The company has launched Snapchat Topic Chats, a new feature designed to help people talk about trending moments and shared interests. The move signals a major shift for the platform, which has always focused on private communication.

Safer Public Chats With Private Profiles

Snapchat says Topic Chats allow users to join discussions on everything from Formula 1 to reality TV. However, profiles will stay private. Others will see your display name, yet they cannot tap through to your profile or find you through search. This approach aims to keep unwanted requests and messages away.

Moreover, Snapchat will use LLM technology and strict safety tools to moderate these conversations. Messages must follow Snapchat’s Community Guidelines. Users can report harmful chats, and the company will warn or block accounts that break rules.

Spotlight Videos Join the Conversation

Topic Chats also bring Spotlight videos into the mix. These short videos appear inside each chat, which helps users discover related content quickly. Snapchat says it learned from public comments on Spotlight and wanted to give its community a cleaner place to talk about trending events.

Friends’ Activity Will Guide Discovery

Users will be able to see which Topic Chats their friends are exploring. Snapchat believes this will help people find conversations that match their interests. The feature will show up across the app, including Chat shortcuts, search, Stories, and Spotlight.

A bright yellow “Join the Chat” button on Stories or Spotlight will let people enter a Topic Chat instantly. Messages in these chats will be stored for up to five years.

Rolling Out Across Three Countries

The feature starts appearing in the U.S., Canada, and New Zealand over the coming weeks. Snapchat says it wants to expand public conversations while maintaining privacy and safety at the core.
