OpenAI and PhonePe Partner to Bring ChatGPT Access to Millions in India

OpenAI and PhonePe have announced a major collaboration to offer ChatGPT access directly within PhonePe’s platforms. The partnership aims to make AI tools more accessible to millions of Indian users.

The integration will be available on both the PhonePe consumer app and the PhonePe for Business app. This means users can soon access ChatGPT to plan trips, explore shopping ideas, or even ask questions — all without leaving the app.

How to Access ChatGPT on PhonePe

Once the feature rolls out, PhonePe users will find ChatGPT integrated under the “AI Chat” or “Ask ChatGPT” section within the app. Users can tap the feature to begin chatting instantly.

Through this integration, ChatGPT will provide quick answers, product suggestions, and task assistance — similar to its web and mobile versions. The goal is to make conversations with AI feel seamless and useful in day-to-day activities like planning, budgeting, or searching for deals.

While the feature is still in phased rollout, PhonePe is expected to notify users once ChatGPT becomes available to all.

Why OpenAI and PhonePe Chose India

India continues to be one of OpenAI’s most important markets. The company has plans to open an office in Delhi and expand its local operations. Earlier this year, OpenAI offered free annual ChatGPT Go subscriptions for Indian users, signaling its long-term commitment to the country.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has often praised India’s rapid adoption of AI. With PhonePe’s vast digital reach — over 500 million users — this partnership marks a big leap in bringing AI to everyday life.

India’s AI competition is heating up, with several platforms offering free or heavily discounted premium access.

• OpenAI: In India, OpenAI is offering its ChatGPT Go tier free for 12 months, covering new users, existing free-tier users, and existing Go subscribers.
• Google Gemini: Through a tie-up with Reliance Jio Infocomm, Google is offering 18-month free access to Gemini AI Pro for Jio users.
• Perplexity AI: In partnership with Bharti Airtel, Perplexity has offered free Pro-tier access to Indian users as part of a broader push.
