Claude Memory Launches: You Can Sync It With ChatGPT

Can Compartmentalize As Part of The Upgrade

Anthropic has officially launched the new Memory feature for all paid Claude users. This update allows the AI to remember projects, context, and other details, making it a smoother collaborator over time. Users can toggle memory on or off, ensuring control over stored information.

How Claude Memory Works

Claude Memory helps users continue projects without repeating instructions. Whether coding, writing, or researching, the AI retains prior conversations. Each project has a separate memory space, so work on one task won’t overlap with another. Users can also delete specific memories or work incognito.

Syncing With ChatGPT

A key feature is the ability to import memory from ChatGPT. Users can export their ChatGPT memory, then upload it into Claude. Although file formats differ, Claude can understand the context and continue where ChatGPT left off. Alternatively, pasting essential details like bio, tone, and brand rules works inside Claude Projects. This ensures continuity across platforms.

Project-Based Memory Management

Claude organizes memory by projects. Each project keeps its context intact, allowing smoother multi-step workflows. For example, a startup roadmap will remain separate from creative writing drafts. This structure improves productivity and reduces confusion across tasks.

Other Claude Pro and Max Features

Memory is the latest addition to Claude’s Pro and Max upgrades. Other tools include:

  • Web Search for real-time information
  • Voice Mode for hands-free operation
  • Claude Code for coding collaboration
  • Research tools for detailed investigations
  • File creation (docs, slides, sheets)
  • Skills for custom workflows
  • Integrations with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Canva, and Figma

These features run on the Claude 4 model family, including Opus 4.1, Sonnet 4.5, and Haiku 4.5.

Safety and Reliability

Anthropic conducted extensive safety tests on Claude Memory. The AI was evaluated for edge cases including wellbeing and misuse. Adjustments ensure memory avoids reinforcing harmful patterns. Chief Product Officer Mike Krieger describes memory as a way to create sustaind thinking partnerships over weeks and months.

Bottom Line

Memory is a significant update for Pro and Max users. It allows AI to maintain context, build on past work, and improve project continuity. The feature is available now for Max subscribers and will reach Pro users soon.
