A consumer comeback through Quark

Quark began as a mobile browser but has now evolved into Alibaba’s flagship consumer platform. It combines AI-powered search with chat features to give users quick, real-time answers.

The new chatbot, powered by Alibaba’s Qwen3 model, supports both text and voice interactions. Moreover, it’s free to use and promises instant, conversational help for users. The company said the tool aims to make daily information access faster and simpler.

Alibaba’s renewed focus on consumers

This launch shows Alibaba’s determination to compete again in a space ruled by ByteDance and Tencent. The company was one of the first in China to release a public AI assistant, Tongyi, back in 2023. However, it never reached mainstream success.

According to analytics platform Aicpb.com, Tongyi had 6.96 million monthly users in September 2025. Meanwhile, ByteDance’s Doubao dominated with 150 million, DeepSeek followed with 73.4 million, and Tencent’s assistant reached 64.2 million.

Therefore, Alibaba’s latest move looks like an attempt to narrow this huge gap and reconnect with everyday users.

Global competition heating up

Globally, AI chat assistants are becoming the next big interface for tech giants. Google has Gemini, Microsoft offers Copilot, and OpenAI leads with ChatGPT.

Now, with Quark’s chatbot, Alibaba wants to join this wave. The integration may help it compete more effectively, not only in China’s crowded ecosystem but also in the global AI race.
