News in short

  • Apple has acknowledged inner-display problems affecting a small number of iPhone Duo units.
  • The company says affected users should contact AppleCare for a replacement.
  • Social media posts showed cracks and lines near the foldable phone’s central hinge.
  • iFixit’s simulation suggested a possible stress point near a display cable and support bar.
  • Apple has not confirmed the cause of the issue or explained the detailed replacement terms.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is facing an early display scare just days after its launch. The company has acknowledged inner-screen problems affecting a small number of iPhone Duo units. It has also told affected customers to contact AppleCare for a replacement.

The development raises an important question for early buyers: what happens if the expensive foldable display develops cracks or lines near the hinge?

Apple began shipping the iPhone Duo last week. Demand was reportedly strong, with initial online orders selling out within minutes. However, social media posts over the weekend showed devices with visible cracks and lines around the central folding area.

Apple has now confirmed that it knows about the problem. The company has not disclosed its cause or explained how many devices are affected.

iPhone Duo screen problem: What will Apple do if your phone breaks?

Apple’s current advice is straightforward. Users who experience inner-display problems should contact AppleCare for a replacement.

The company said the issue affects a small number of iPhone Duo units. It also noted that affected devices tend to show the problem quickly.

However, Apple has not publicly detailed the replacement process, eligibility conditions or whether every type of screen damage will qualify. Buyers should therefore contact AppleCare rather than assume that all cracked displays will receive automatic replacement.

That distinction matters for a foldable phone. Its inner screen must bend repeatedly, making the display and hinge central to the device’s long-term durability.

Apple’s response offers some reassurance to affected customers. Yet the company still needs to explain the issue more clearly, especially for people considering a purchase.

iPhone Duo hinge design faces scrutiny

The cause of the reported damage remains unconfirmed. However, repair specialist iFixit has offered a possible explanation based on its analysis.

According to Reuters, iFixit used teardown footage, patents and CT scans to build a 3D simulation of the iPhone Duo hinge. Its analysis suggested that the reported damage clustered near a display cable beneath the screen and close to a central support bar.

iFixit said the support bar might not move out of the display’s way properly during folding. That could create a concentrated stress point near the reported break location.

This is a potential explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis. Apple has not endorsed iFixit’s findings or publicly identified a design defect.

Interestingly, iFixit also concluded that the iPhone Duo was the most repairable foldable phone it had tested. That assessment may offer some positive context, but repairability alone does not prevent a screen from failing.

Can Apple contain the damage to its first foldable iPhone?

Apple’s quick replacement response could help limit the impact of the reports. IDC vice president Francisco Jeronimo described the move as the “right first step”, according to Reuters.

The comparison with Samsung’s original Galaxy Fold is difficult to ignore. Samsung faced problems with its first foldable phone in 2019, highlighting the engineering challenges involved in this product category.

For Apple, the next steps will matter. The company has yet to explain what causes the reported display failures or whether it has made changes to production.

For now, iPhone Duo owners who notice cracks or lines should contact AppleCare and document the damage. Prospective buyers should also watch for further information about the issue and Apple’s replacement terms.

Apple has acknowledged the problem and offered a route for affected customers. But until the company explains the cause and scope, questions about the first iPhone Duo’s screen durability will remain.
