News in short

  • Apple could unveil touchscreen MacBook Pro models on October 28, according to a report.
  • The 14-inch and 16-inch laptops are tipped to feature OLED displays and a lighter design.
  • A Dynamic Island could replace the notch on the current MacBook Pro models.
  • Touch controls may arrive alongside macOS changes designed for both touch and trackpad input.
  • The new models could cost up to $500 more than their current counterparts in the US.

Apple could be preparing one of the biggest changes to its MacBook Pro lineup in years. The company is reportedly working on its first touchscreen MacBook Pro models, featuring OLED displays, a lighter design and a Dynamic Island.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple could introduce new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models on October 28. The laptops are expected to retain a design similar to the current generation while bringing significant display and software changes.

The reported upgrades could also make the new MacBook Pro models more expensive. Their starting prices in the US could rise by up to $500 compared with the current models.

MacBook Pro could replace its notch with Dynamic Island

One of the most noticeable changes could involve the display. Apple is reportedly planning to replace the notch on the current MacBook Pro with a Dynamic Island at the top of the screen.

The feature could bring alerts and ongoing activities to macOS through an interface inspired by Apple’s iPhone experience. However, the report does not confirm exactly how Dynamic Island will work on a Mac.

The upcoming laptops are also tipped to switch from mini-LED panels to OLED displays. OLED technology could improve contrast and deliver deeper blacks, while offering another major visual upgrade for professional users.

Apple is reportedly planning to retain the 14-inch and 16-inch screen sizes. The new models could also be lighter than their predecessors, although specific weight figures have not been disclosed.

Apple could introduce touchscreen controls to macOS

Touchscreen support could mark a major shift in Apple’s approach to MacBooks. The company has traditionally relied on keyboards, trackpads and external pointing devices for Mac interaction.

According to the report, Apple is developing macOS changes under the reported name macOS Golden Gate. The interface could adapt to whether users interact with the laptop through touch or a trackpad.

Touching certain controls could bring up menus near the user’s finger. Apple may also optimise elements such as the Dock and Menu Bar for touch input.

The touchscreen is reportedly intended to complement the keyboard and trackpad rather than replace them. Users could switch between input methods depending on the task.

This approach could make the MacBook Pro more flexible for creative work, navigation and quick interactions. However, the usefulness of the feature will depend on how well Apple adapts macOS applications and controls for touch.

MacBook Pro may retain M5 Pro and M5 Max chips

Despite the reported display and interface changes, Apple may not introduce new processors with these models. The laptops are expected to retain the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips introduced with the current MacBook Pro lineup in March.

If accurate, this would suggest that Apple is focusing this update on display technology, design and interaction rather than a processor upgrade.

The report does not provide detailed specifications for the upcoming models. Performance improvements, memory configurations and other hardware changes remain unconfirmed.

Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro could cost more

The reported move to OLED displays and touchscreen technology could increase prices. In the US, the current 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max options starts at $2,499, while the 16-inch model starts at $2,999.

According to the report, the new OLED touchscreen models could start at prices up to $500 higher.

Apple has not officially confirmed the launch, specifications or pricing described in the report. The final prices and availability will become clearer if the company announces the laptops.

If these changes arrive as expected, the next MacBook Pro could represent more than a routine hardware refresh. A touchscreen, Dynamic Island and OLED display would change how users interact with Apple’s professional laptops, while potentially raising the cost of entry.
