OpenAI is expanding its AI agent push with Dot, an always-on agent designed to work on a user’s behalf. Unlike a traditional chatbot, Dot can take a project and work through multiple steps without requiring instructions at every stage.
The company says Dot can learn a user’s preferences and standards through feedback. It can then use that context to handle recurring work, research tasks and projects in the background.
What Is OpenAI’s Dot?
Dot is an AI agent designed to take on work rather than simply respond to individual prompts.
OpenAI says Dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra. Each Dot has its own cloud computer and browser, allowing it to interact with connected apps and services.
The agent can also continue working on multiple projects. Users can give it new tasks without having to manage separate conversations or guide every individual step.
OpenAI describes this as a shift towards AI that works alongside users continuously.
What Can OpenAI’s Dot Do?
Dot can handle different types of work depending on the user’s needs.
For developers, OpenAI says a Dot can monitor customer feedback, identify smaller improvements, build and test fixes, and prepare pull requests for review.
For product teams, it can update launch materials when project requirements change. It can also revise documents and other assets based on the direction provided by the user.
OpenAI also highlights research and sales use cases. A Dot can update analysis when new evidence arrives or check customer requirements and product documentation while preparing an enterprise proposal.
For content creators, Dot can process interview transcripts, identify moments for clips, prepare show notes and draft social media posts.
How Does OpenAI’s Dot Work?
A Dot has its own cloud computer, browser and access to connected apps. Users can also inspect the Dot’s computer while it works.
OpenAI says Dots can connect to more than 4,000 apps through its plugin ecosystem. They can also work across different communication platforms.
Users can message or call their Dot through ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile. Dots can also message users with progress updates, questions or decisions that need attention.
The agent can also work through Slack and Microsoft Teams. OpenAI says context can move across these channels, allowing the Dot to continue a project without starting from scratch.
Can OpenAI’s Dot Work Without You?
Yes. Independent work is one of Dot’s main features.
OpenAI says Dots can work in the background and look for ways to help. The company calls this capability “proactive research.”
However, background work has restrictions. During proactive research, connected apps use read-only tools. This means the Dot cannot send messages, change app content or control the user’s computer during that process.
Users can also set custom rules. These rules can allow specific actions, require approval or block certain actions altogether.
How Does OpenAI Keep Dot Under Control?
OpenAI says users remain in control of the agent’s access and actions.
Users decide which apps a Dot can access through existing ChatGPT controls. The system also has built-in rules that determine when a Dot can act independently and when it must request approval.
Dots also use an auto-review system for actions that could affect accounts or share information. Certain sensitive tasks, such as changing a password, always remain with the user.
OpenAI also warns that Dots can make mistakes. The company recommends reviewing consequential work before relying on it.
What Are Specialist Dots?
OpenAI is also developing specialist Dots for organisations.
Unlike a general-purpose Dot, a specialist Dot can have its own identity, credentials and access to specific company systems. Organisations can define its responsibilities and the tools it can use.
OpenAI says it has tested this approach across areas including procurement, invoice processing, email marketing, customer support and commercial contracting.
The company is also working with Microsoft to integrate specialist Dots with Microsoft Agent 365’s enterprise governance and security controls.
OpenAI Dot Availability
Dots are rolling out to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Enterprise users, including Edu and Healthcare workspaces, can access the beta when their administrators enable it.
OpenAI says the first Dot is included with Pro and Business Premium plans at no additional cost.
Users can create their first Dot through the ChatGPT desktop app or desktop browser. After setup, they can also message it through the ChatGPT mobile app.
OpenAI plans to expand Dots to more users and eventually allow users to add more Dots and scale the amount of work they can handle.
