News in Short
- Qualcomm has launched the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Elite Extreme Gen 6.
- Both chipsets are built on a 2nm process.
- The Extreme variant is positioned as Qualcomm’s flagship mobile platform.
- The chipsets feature next-generation Oryon CPU clusters clocked up to 5GHz.
- Qualcomm claims 35 percent higher NPU performance and 80 percent faster processing.
Qualcomm has launched its latest flagship smartphone chipsets, bringing its 2nm platform to the next generation of premium Android phones.
The new lineup includes the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Qualcomm positions the Extreme variant as the higher-end platform in this year’s range.
Both chipsets focus heavily on on-device AI. They also promise improvements in gaming, camera performance and connectivity.
The platforms are expected to power upcoming flagship smartphones from brands including Honor, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmi, RedMagic, Vivo and Xiaomi.
Why the 2nm Process Matters
The move to 2nm is one of the biggest changes in Qualcomm’s latest flagship platform.
The smaller process is being used alongside a redesigned architecture aimed at improving performance and efficiency. Qualcomm is also competing directly with MediaTek’s 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro platform.
For consumers, the importance of the new process will become clearer once smartphones using these chipsets arrive. Actual battery life and sustained performance will depend on the individual phone’s hardware and cooling system.
AI Takes Centre Stage
Qualcomm is putting AI at the centre of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series.
Both platforms feature a reengineered Hexagon NPU. Qualcomm says the new architecture delivers 35 percent improved NPU performance and 80 percent faster processing.
The chipsets can also run AI models with more than 30 billion parameters on the device.
That could allow future smartphones to handle more advanced AI tasks locally rather than relying entirely on cloud processing.
The platforms also include Qualcomm’s Sensing Hub, which is designed to support low-power personal context features.
This could become important as smartphone assistants move beyond simple commands towards more context-aware and personalised AI experiences.
New Oryon CPUs Reach 5GHz
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series also gets next-generation Oryon CPU clusters.
Qualcomm says these CPU clusters can reach a peak clock speed of 5GHz.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 also gets an upgraded Adreno GPU with matrix cores and Adreno Neural Fusion.
These changes are designed to improve both conventional processing and AI workloads.
Gaming is another major focus. Qualcomm says the new platforms deliver improved gaming performance, while the Extreme variant receives additional GPU enhancements.
Actual gaming performance will still depend on the smartphone’s thermal system, software optimisation and display configuration.
Faster 5G and Wi-Fi
Connectivity is also getting an upgrade with the new Snapdragon platforms.
Both chipsets use Qualcomm’s X105 5G Modem-RF System. It supports peak 5G download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps.
The platforms also feature the FastConnect 8800 Mobile Connectivity System. Qualcomm claims up to twice the peak speed, three times longer range and Wi-Fi download speeds of up to 11.6Gbps.
The chipsets support Wi-Fi 8 and Bluetooth 6 as well.
These numbers represent peak platform capabilities. Real-world speeds will depend on networks, routers, carriers and other factors.
Camera and Video Capabilities Get a Boost
Qualcomm is also expanding the camera capabilities supported by its latest platforms.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series can support camera sensors of up to 320 megapixels. The chipsets also support video recording at up to 8K resolution and 60fps.
They support Dolby Vision, Google Ultra HDR, HDR10, HDR10+ and Hybrid Log-Gamma.
The platforms also support UFS 5.0 storage and LPDDR5x RAM.
This gives smartphone manufacturers more flexibility when designing flagship camera systems and storage configurations.
OnePlus 16, Xiaomi 18 Pro and More Phones to Follow
The new chipsets are headed for several upcoming flagship smartphones.
The source specifically identifies upcoming models including the OnePlus 16, Motorola Signature 27 and Xiaomi 18 Pro as devices expected to use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series.
The broader Qualcomm announcement also names Honor, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmi, RedMagic, Vivo and Xiaomi among the manufacturers adopting the new platforms.
The biggest shift with this generation is therefore not just higher peak performance. Qualcomm is clearly building its flagship platform around on-device AI, faster connectivity and more capable computing.
The real test will come when these chipsets reach smartphones and consumers can experience their performance, efficiency and AI capabilities in everyday use.
