Reasons to buy
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 9: Strong everyday health tracking with Fitness Index, Cardio Load and Heart Health Score.
- Galaxy Watch Ultra 2: Built for serious fitness users with trail running, GPX navigation and diving features.
- Bright AMOLED displays: Up to 3,000 nits on the Galaxy Watch 9 and 5,000 nits on the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.
- Snapdragon Wear Elite: Both Samsung smartwatches deliver smooth performance and faster app response.
- Better health tracking: Both watches monitor heart rate, sleep, blood oxygen, skin temperature and body composition.
- Longer Ultra 2 battery: The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 can deliver around 48 to 50 hours in realistic use.
Samsung’s latest smartwatches take different approaches to the same goal. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 targets everyday users who want better health insights. The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 focuses more heavily on fitness and outdoor use. The price also creates a clear divide between them. The Watch 9 starts at ₹37,999, while the Ultra 2 costs ₹64,999.
That makes the choice less straightforward than simply picking the more expensive watch. The Ultra 2 offers more battery life and specialised fitness tools. However, many users may not need those extras. Meanwhile, the Watch 9 delivers most of Samsung’s health features at a much lower price. So, which one makes more sense for you?
Two watches, two very different purposes
The design immediately shows where Samsung has positioned these watches. The Ultra 2 uses a circular display inside a cushion-shaped titanium case. It looks rugged without appearing overly industrial. The Titanium Silver finish on my review unit also gives it a premium adventure-watch feel.
It remains a substantial watch at 61.5 grams. However, Samsung has improved the balance. The thinner profile keeps it closer to the wrist during workouts. The redesigned Marine Band also feels lighter and more flexible.
The Watch 9 takes the safer route. It keeps Samsung’s familiar circular design and rounded-square bezel. Its dynamic lug system helps keep the watch closer to the wrist. The lighter bands also improve comfort during long periods.
Therefore, the Watch 9 suits everyday wear better. The Ultra 2 makes more sense if you prefer a tougher outdoor design.
The displays are bright enough for Indian summers
Samsung has equipped the Ultra 2 with a 1.52-inch Super AMOLED display. It can reach a claimed peak brightness of 5,000 nits. More importantly, the screen remains easy to read outdoors.
Colours look vibrant and text stays sharp. The larger display also provides more room for workout information. That helps when you want to check several metrics quickly.
The Watch 9 comes in 40mm and 44mm versions. It uses a Super AMOLED panel with up to 438 x 438 resolution. Its 3,000-nit peak brightness also handles outdoor viewing well.
Both watches perform well here. Therefore, display quality should not decide your purchase.
Health tracking gets more useful
Samsung has moved beyond simply counting steps and measuring heart rate. Both watches use the BioActive Sensor for several health measurements. These include heart rate, blood oxygen, skin temperature and body composition.
You also get sleep tracking and Energy Score. Supported markets can access ECG and blood-pressure monitoring. Sleep-apnoea detection adds another useful layer for compatible users.
The Watch 9 adds three features that stand out. Fitness Index looks at several aspects of physical fitness. Cardio Load helps you understand workout intensity. Heart Health Score combines several health indicators.
These features make the Watch 9 more useful for everyday users. However, Samsung’s app could explain the collected data better. Oura still provides a more detailed view of health trends.
Sleep tracking also needs refinement. I noticed occasional gaps in the recorded data. Those gaps can affect the final sleep score and recommendations.
The Ultra 2 earns its higher price outdoors
The biggest reason to choose the Ultra 2 sits beyond everyday health tracking. Trail Run adds elevation, incline and elevation-gain information. You can also import GPX routes for navigation.
The watch also supports diving data. It can record depth, water temperature and dive duration. Its 10ATM, IP69K and MIL-STD-810H ratings add further protection.
The Watch 9 still offers plenty for regular workouts. It automatically detects activities such as walking, running and elliptical sessions. During testing, automatic workout detection worked quickly and reliably.
Heart-rate tracking also stayed close to premium competitors. Running data includes cadence, speed, elevation and form metrics. However, step counting occasionally missed the mark.
So, the Ultra 2 earns its premium mainly through specialised features. Casual users may not get enough value from those additions.
Performance is no longer a concern
Both watches use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite platform. The Watch 9 pairs it with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage. The Ultra 2 doubles storage to 64GB.
In everyday use, both watches feel fast. Apps open quickly, animations remain smooth and menus respond without obvious delays. Google apps also benefit from the newer platform.
Wear OS 7 and One UI 9 provide the software foundation. You get access to Google Maps, Wallet, Gmail, Spotify and other apps. LTE on the Ultra 2 also enables greater independence from your phone.
Samsung has added Gemini and new gesture controls. The idea works well, although the Ultra 2’s raise-to-talk gesture sometimes failed during testing.
Battery life could have been better
This remains the biggest compromise.
The Ultra 2 packs an 800mAh battery. With Always On Display enabled and regular workouts, I managed roughly 48 to 50 hours. That makes two-day use realistic.
The Watch 9 struggles more. The 44mm version uses a 445mAh battery. Even so, around one day of use is more realistic with Always On Display enabled.
Charging also takes patience. The Watch 9 took around 108 minutes to reach full capacity. The Ultra 2 can reach about 40 percent in 30 minutes. However, a full charge still takes roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes.
At ₹37,999 and ₹64,999, Samsung should have pushed charging and endurance further.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 vs Galaxy Watch Ultra 2: Which one should you buy?
The Watch 9 is the smarter choice for most buyers. It delivers strong fitness tracking, useful health insights and a polished smartwatch experience. It also costs considerably less.
The Ultra 2 becomes easier to justify if you run trails, dive or spend significant time outdoors. Its tougher build, navigation tools and larger storage support that lifestyle.
Compared with premium Apple and Google watches, Samsung offers a strong balance of health features and smartwatch functions. However, Samsung still needs to improve sleep-data consistency and battery performance.
Ultimately, the choice comes down to how you exercise. Buy the Watch 9 for everyday health and fitness. Choose the Ultra 2 if your workouts demand more from your smartwatch. That distinction makes the ₹27,000 price gap easier to understand.
