Xbox is introducing a new feature that will let players claim a digital entitlement for supported games they own on physical discs. The move aims to give players more flexibility in how they access games across the Xbox ecosystem while also supporting Microsoft’s broader game preservation efforts.

Xbox Insiders will begin testing the feature on August 31.

Xbox Brings Digital Benefits to Physical Discs

Under the new system, players can insert a supported game disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game. They can then claim a digital entitlement for that title.

Once claimed, players can access supported digital benefits while continuing to use the physical disc as before.

Microsoft says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the new feature. The company plans to start with thousands of titles and add more games over time.

However, Microsoft has not said that every physical game will qualify at launch.

Physical Discs Will Continue to Work

The new feature does not replace or invalidate the physical copy. According to Xbox, the disc will continue to work in the same way after a player claims the digital entitlement.

At the same time, the digital entitlement can unlock benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, where those services support the particular game.

This gives players more ways to access supported games without changing how their physical discs function.

Xbox Says Feature Supports Game Preservation

Xbox is positioning the move as part of its wider effort to preserve players’ game libraries.

Players have built Xbox collections across several generations, with some games available on physical discs and others purchased digitally. Microsoft says it wants to make it easier for those libraries to move forward as hardware, technology and game distribution evolve.

The company says the new feature should give players greater confidence that the games they purchase can remain part of their libraries for years.

The feature will initially cover thousands of titles, while Xbox plans to expand compatibility over time.
