Spotify has launched Playlist Notes, a new feature that lets listeners explain why they added specific content to their playlists. Users can add notes to songs, podcast episodes and audiobooks.

The feature builds on Spotify’s User Notes, which launched last month and allowed listeners to attach personal thoughts to individual tracks.

With Playlist Notes, the context moves from individual songs to the playlists themselves. A track could remind someone of a particular person, capture a specific moment or simply be a recommendation worth sharing.

The feature gives listeners a way to add a personal layer to playlists instead of letting the song titles speak for themselves.

How do you add a note to a Spotify playlist?

Adding a note requires Spotify’s mobile app. Users need to open a playlist they own or collaborate on and tap the three-dot menu next to a song, podcast episode or audiobook.

They can then select “Add note,” write their message and save it. Anyone who can view the playlist can also see the note.

User-created notes are rolling out on both iOS and Android across more than 100 markets.

Spotify is also giving the feature to its editorial teams. This means the people responsible for major playlists can explain why particular tracks made the cut.

Which Spotify playlists will get editor notes?

Spotify is initially adding editor notes to some of its biggest editorial playlists. These include Today’s Top Hits, RapCaviar, Hot Country, All New Pop and Fresh Finds Hip-Hop.

The company is also introducing Editor Profiles. These profiles will show an editor’s top tracks and albums, along with the playlists they help create.

That gives listeners more visibility into the people behind Spotify’s recommendations. It could also make playlist discovery feel less like an algorithmic feed and more like a recommendation from someone with a specific taste.

Editor notes and profiles are initially rolling out to free and Premium users aged 16 and older in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
