As AI-generated videos become increasingly realistic, verifying whether footage is genuine has become one of journalism’s biggest challenges. To address this growing concern, Nvidia has unveiled a new AI-powered tool that helps newsrooms identify synthetic videos before they are published.

Announced at SIGGRAPH 2026, the Synthetic Video Detector NIM microservice is part of Nvidia’s AI for Media platform. Instead of deciding whether the events shown in a video are true or false, the tool estimates whether the footage itself was generated using artificial intelligence or captured by a real camera.

Why Is Nvidia Launching This Tool?

The rapid advancement of generative AI has made it possible to create videos that are nearly indistinguishable from authentic footage. While this technology has opened new creative possibilities, it has also increased the risk of misinformation, manipulated content, and sophisticated deepfakes spreading across social media and news platforms.

Nvidia says public trust in video journalism depends on the ability to verify digital content quickly, especially during breaking news events where speed and accuracy are equally important.

Rather than replacing existing verification workflows, the company positions its AI detector as an additional layer of analysis that helps editors prioritize suspicious clips for further investigation.

How Does the Synthetic Video Detector Work?

The Nvidia Synthetic Video Detector analyzes videos frame by frame using advanced computer vision models based on DINOv2 and DINOv3 vision transformers.

Each frame receives a classification score indicating the likelihood that it was synthetically generated. Those individual scores are then combined into a single confidence rating for the entire video.

Importantly, Nvidia emphasizes that the tool does not determine whether the content of a video is factually correct. Instead, it focuses solely on identifying whether the video itself appears to have been created using AI.

Editorial teams can use the score to flag questionable footage, prioritize manual review, or escalate videos for deeper forensic analysis before publication.

Built for Real-World Newsroom Workflows

One of the biggest challenges in AI detection is that videos are often compressed, resized, cropped, or re-encoded before reaching news organizations.

Nvidia says its detector is designed to remain effective even after these common processing steps. According to the company’s internal testing, the model achieved up to 92 percent accuracy on uncompressed videos, while maintaining 87 percent accuracy after moderate compression and 82 percent accuracy even under heavier compression.

The service is also optimized for speed. Nvidia says it can process Full HD (1080p) video in as little as 22 milliseconds on RTX-powered systems, allowing newsrooms to analyze footage almost instantly.

Who Can Use It?

Beyond media organizations, Nvidia expects the technology to benefit broadcasters, government agencies, financial institutions, and operators of critical infrastructure that regularly verify video evidence.

The company says the detector can be deployed on-premises, at the edge, in hybrid environments, or even within isolated networks where sensitive video cannot leave local infrastructure.

Streaming technology company Wowza has already integrated the service into its Video Intelligence Framework, extending synthetic video detection to live streaming workflows used across thousands of deployments worldwide.

The rise of generative AI is transforming digital media, but it is also making it harder to distinguish authentic footage from synthetic content. As deepfake technology becomes more sophisticated, verification tools are becoming essential rather than optional for news organizations.

Nvidia’s Synthetic Video Detector represents another step toward AI-assisted journalism, where artificial intelligence helps reporters verify content instead of replacing editorial judgment. While no detection system can guarantee absolute accuracy, combining AI with human oversight could play a crucial role in preserving public trust in digital news as synthetic media continues to evolve.
