Google Vids Gets AI Avatars That Let You Star in Your Own Videos

Key Highlights

  • Google Vids now lets users create a personal AI avatar using a selfie and voice recording.
  • The platform is also gaining Gemini Omni-powered video generation and editing capabilities.
  • Users can generate videos from prompts and images, edit scenes step by step, and enhance existing clips.
  • The update positions Google Vids against AI video platforms such as HeyGen, Synthesia, and D-ID.

Google is giving its AI-powered video platform a major upgrade by introducing personalized AI avatars and new Gemini Omni-powered video creation tools. The latest update allows users to generate a digital version of themselves using a selfie and a short voice recording, making it possible to appear in AI-generated videos without recording every scene manually.

The new features also transform Google Vids from an AI-assisted presentation tool into a broader video creation platform, expanding its capabilities for businesses, creators, and professionals.

What is new in Google Vids?

The biggest addition is support for personal AI avatars. Users can upload a selfie and a voice sample to create a digital avatar that looks and sounds like them. The avatar can then present AI-generated videos, making it easier to create presentations, training content, updates, and explainers without spending hours on camera.

Google says these avatars are linked to the account owner’s identity, helping reduce misuse. Every AI-generated avatar video is also invisibly watermarked using SynthID, Google’s AI content authentication technology.

The feature will initially be available only to users aged 18 and older in supported regions.

Gemini Omni brings smarter AI video creation

Google is also integrating its multimodal AI model, Gemini Omni, into Google Vids.

With this update, users can generate videos by combining text prompts with reference images. Instead of relying only on written instructions, Gemini Omni understands multiple input formats to create more customized videos.

The model can also perform practical editing tasks. Users can replace backgrounds, improve lighting in videos recorded on a smartphone, add visual effects, and make scene-by-scene edits without restarting the entire project.

This step-by-step editing workflow makes AI-assisted video creation more flexible and efficient.

Why is this update important?

Google launched Vids primarily as an AI-powered presentation tool for Google Workspace users. However, the latest features significantly expand its role.

By introducing AI avatars and advanced video generation, Google is entering a rapidly growing market dominated by platforms like HeyGen, Synthesia, Captions, and D-ID. These companies have built businesses around AI presenters and automated video production for enterprises and content creators.

Unlike standalone AI video startups, Google benefits from deep integration with Workspace, allowing businesses to create presentations, training videos, and internal communications within the same ecosystem they already use.

What does it mean for AI video creation?

The latest update shows that AI video tools are evolving beyond simple text-to-video generation. Instead, companies are focusing on making AI capable of representing users, editing content intelligently, and reducing production time.

With personal avatars, multimodal video generation, and conversational editing powered by Gemini Omni, Google Vids is positioning itself as an end-to-end AI video platform. As competition in AI-generated media intensifies, the race is increasingly shifting from creating videos to making professional-quality content faster, safer, and more personalized.
