As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape industries, professionals across the world are racing to stay ahead. In India, this shift is particularly evident in the growing demand for upskilling in Generative AI (GenAI). Online learning platform Udemy has seen a significant surge in Indian learners enrolling in GenAI courses, highlighting the country’s focus on future-ready skills.
In an interview with YourStory, Udemy’s President and CEO, Greg Brown, revealed that India is one of the fastest-growing markets for AI upskilling. The platform currently has 16 million learners from India, many of whom are actively pursuing GenAI courses.
Why the Rush to Learn GenAI?
With 65% of India’s population under the age of 35, staying competitive in the job market is a top priority. Brown shared that in the past year alone, Udemy recorded 1.2 million GenAI course enrollments from India — equating to more than two enrollments per minute.
According to Brown, organizations are prioritizing three key areas when it comes to upskilling. Firstly, GenAI Skills! As AI adoption grows, companies are training employees in AI-driven tools and technologies. Second is Soft Skills to complement technical expertise. Professionals are honing skills like communication and teamwork. Lastly, leadership training – senior professionals are learning how to strategically implement AI in business operations.
A Shift from Learning to Application
Brown noted that 2024 was a year of foundational learning, with companies introducing AI education programs. In 2025, the focus will shift toward real-world application, as businesses seek to integrate AI into workflows and decision-making.
While tech skills remain in high demand, Udemy has also seen rising interest in cloud computing, data science, and software engineering. Additionally, problem-solving and English communication skills are becoming increasingly popular among Indian learners.
Udemy’s Role in AI Upskilling
To support this rapid growth, Udemy is leveraging AI to personalize learning experiences and expanding regional course offerings. The platform provides instructor-led courses in multiple languages to enhance accessibility for Indian learners.
As AI continues to shape the future of work, platforms like Udemy are playing a crucial role in equipping professionals with the skills needed to stay ahead in an AI-driven world.
