Tesla has officially started hiring in India after years of uncertainty. The company recently posted job openings for 13 roles on LinkedIn. This move follows a meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s visit to the U.S.
Tesla’s Job Openings in India
The company is looking for candidates to fill both customer-facing and backend roles. Positions such as Inside Sales Advisor, Customer Support Supervisor, Service Technician, Order Operations Specialist, Business Operations Analyst and Service Manager are open. The roles are based in Mumbai and Delhi.
Tesla’s expansion is a promising step for India’s electric vehicle (EV) market. The move signals the company’s growing interest in the Indian market and its readiness to tap into local talent.
Tesla and India’s On-and-Off Relationship
Tesla has long been in talks with India but has held back due to high import duties. The company has repeatedly urged the Indian government to lower taxes on EVs. Until recently, India imposed a 110% import duty on luxury electric cars priced above $40,000. However, in March, the government reduced this duty to 70% for companies investing at least $500 million in local production.
India is the world’s third-largest greenhouse gas emitter. The country aims to decarbonize its economy and achieve net zero emissions by 2070. Tesla’s entry into India could support this goal by promoting clean energy and EV adoption.
Will Tesla Set Up a Factory in India?
Elon Musk was expected to visit India last April to discuss potential investments, including setting up a manufacturing facility. However, he postponed the visit due to urgent matters at Tesla. Now, with job postings live, speculation is rising about Tesla’s next steps in India.
The recent reduction in import duties may pave the way for Tesla to set up a local manufacturing plant. This could create thousands of jobs and make Tesla vehicles more affordable for Indian consumers.
