New Social Media App on the Block: Instagram Alternative Flashes Launches Publicly

Flashes, a new photo-sharing app, has officially launched on the App Store, quickly attracting users. Within 24 hours, it saw nearly 30,000 downloads, signaling strong interest in an Instagram alternative.

The app allows users to upload up to four photos or videos, each up to a minute long. Its interface closely resembles Instagram but offers more customization and freedom.

Built on Bluesky’s AT Protocol

Flashes is powered by the AT Protocol (or atproto), the same decentralized technology behind the growing social platform Bluesky. With over 32 million users, Bluesky provides a built-in audience for Flashes. Posts made on Flashes can reach a broader network beyond the app itself, enhancing visibility and engagement.

More Customization, Less Algorithm Control

Unlike traditional social media platforms, Flashes does not force users into a fixed algorithm. Instead, users can access over 50,000 custom feeds on Bluesky, allowing them to curate their content as they like. Built-in feeds also highlight both trending and latest posts across the Bluesky network, ensuring fresh content discovery.

A Platform for Photographers and Creators

Flashes caters to photographers and artists who want to showcase their work professionally. A unique “Portfolio Mode” lets users curate their profile, selecting which photos appear to visitors. This feature ensures that users can highlight their best work upfront.

The app also includes built-in photo filters for editing, similar to Instagram. Additionally, Flashes supports curated feeds for artists, with its latest update featuring images from the Blacksky community. Blacksky has been instrumental in developing tools for the Black community on Bluesky, including specialized feeds and moderation services.

Future Plans and Investor Interest

Flashes’ rapid growth has already attracted investor interest. The app had reached 40,500 downloads by Thursday and is part of a new wave of apps leveraging Bluesky’s open platform. Developer Sebastian Vogelsang has confirmed that discussions with investors are ongoing, and he is open to funding opportunities.

With its unique features, decentralized foundation, and rapid adoption, Flashes is positioning itself as a promising alternative to traditional photo-sharing apps.
