Google Powers Image Editing in Gemini App
In a significant upgrade to its AI capabilities, Google has started rolling out native image editing tools to the Gemini app, bringing features previously exclusive to AI Studio directly into users’ hands. The move marks a broader push by Google to make AI-powered creative tools more accessible and intuitive for everyday use.
Earlier this year, Google introduced native AI image editing in AI Studio, enabling users to manipulate AI-generated visuals with ease. Following a wave of positive feedback, these tools are now being integrated into the Gemini app, which supports over 45 languages and is available in most countries. The rollout began today and will continue expanding over the coming weeks.
Edit Personal Photos and AI Creations with Ease
Users can now upload their own images from their phone or computer to the Gemini app and modify them using AI. The editing features allow for background changes, object replacement, addition of new elements, and even aesthetic changes like altering hair color. For instance, a user could upload a selfie and prompt Gemini to generate variations showing different hairstyles or settings.
This multi-step, contextual editing experience combines text and image generation, allowing users to craft rich visual stories or creative drafts. One possible use case is asking Gemini to write a children’s bedtime story — complete with AI-generated illustrations of dragons or fairytale landscapes.
Watermarking for Responsible AI Use
As with all image content generated by Gemini, the edited or newly created visuals will include an invisible digital watermark called SynthID. Google is also testing a visible watermark to clearly indicate AI-generated content, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and responsible AI use.
Global Expansion Underway
The feature is being introduced gradually, with availability set to widen in the coming weeks. Users across supported regions can expect a seamless integration of image editing into their existing Gemini experience, making creative content generation more dynamic and interactive.
With this update, Google continues to push the boundaries of consumer-level AI tools, transforming how users interact with and manipulate digital media.
